William Mason Brighton of Shirleysburg, Pa., died, September 6, 2026, at age 25. Unbelievably smart and fiercely loyal, Will had an immense store of knowledge about seemingly everything and was funny as hell. Happiest when working with his hands, he had particular interests in mechanics, carpentry, firearms, and psychology. A deep belief in honor and honesty guided him, and he would go to extraordinary lengths to protect those closest to him. Born December 3, 2000, in Benton, Ark., Will was Melissa and Drew Brighton’s first child and his extended family’s eagerly awaited first grandson and nephew. Nicknamed “Iron Will” almost from birth, he grew into the name. His determination became one of his defining qualities. He kept everyone around him on their toes and made them exponentially better. Will married Maria Sophia Gottwald Brighton three years ago. He also shared close friendships with Dan, Craig, Earl, Tommy, Karl, Vanessa, Tanya, Jane, and many others. His compassion was unfaltering, particularly for those going through difficult times. He helped countless people through their darkest moments and could be extraordinarily generous with anyone who needed him. Will faced battles of his own and did not always find the peace he sought. But he was oh so dearly loved. Those closest to him take comfort now in believing he has found that peace. Will is survived by his wife, Maria Sophia Gottwald Brighton; his parents, Melissa (Taulbee) Brighton and Drew Brighton; his brother, Sam Brighton; his sister, Kate Brighton; his paternal grandparents, Susan (Dunlap) Brighton and Steve Brighton; his maternal grandparents, Caryn (Betlem) Taulbee and Glenn Taulbee; and many other relatives and friends whose lives are better for having had Will in them.
