Sloan, Patrick J., 88, of Cresson, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by his loving family. Born July 14, 1938, in Lilly, he was the son of the late John F. and Nora H. (McDonald) Sloan. Patrick was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Norma Jean (Payne) Sloan; and his siblings, Gwendolyn McCabe, Alice Einhorn, Mary Lou Sloan, Magadalyn Sloan, Michael Sloan, James Sloan, John Sloan, and Paul Sloan. He is survived by his two daughters, Karen (Wade) Venesky and Linda Audley; four grandchildren, Patrick Venesky, Calvin Venesky, Nat (Lauren) Audley, and Anna Audley; siblings, Robert (Joan) Sloan, Judy Williams, and Florence (Daniel) Eberhart; sister-in-law, Betty Sloan; and many nieces and nephews. A 1957 graduate of Lilly-Washington Joint High School, Patrick went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. During the Eisenhower era, he was honored to be a member of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team and Ceremonial Guard. His service also took him to Scotland, where he took part in the World's Fair. His devotion to the military and to his fellow veterans did not end with his honorable discharge. Patrick helped veterans at every opportunity, and he was a proud member of the Cresson American Legion and a recipient of the American Legion Award. In 1964, Patrick opened PJ's Tavern in Cresson, and for many years he dedicated himself to the business and the people who walked through its doors. Outside of work, Patrick took the greatest pride in what he gave back to his community. In 1972, he founded the Cresson Township Veteran's Park. Years later, he spearheaded the fundraising for the park's pickleball court and helped coordinate its installation. Over the course of his life, with the help of friends and family, he raised more than $100,000 for the park through fundraisers that included a cross-country ski trek from Blue Knob to PJ's Tavern and, in later years, a bike ride. In his spare time, Patrick enjoyed golfing at the Summit Country Club and riding his bike. Above all, he cherished time with his family and grandchildren, especially cheering them on at their sporting events. One of Patrick's favorite sayings was, "As we are passing through." He lived by those words, giving freely of his time and energy to make things better for those around him. His legacy will endure in the park he founded, in the veterans he served, in the neighbors and community members whose lives he touched, and in the family who loved him dearly. At Patrick's request, there will be no viewing or visitation. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Alleghenies, Lilly, with Fr. Matthew Reese as celebrant. Inurnment will follow at St. Brigid's Cemetery, Lilly. Military Honors will be provided by the Cresson American Legion, Sankertown VFW, and other local military organizations. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cresson Township Veteran's Park, 730 Portage Road, Cresson, PA 16630. Arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 233 Keystone Ave., Cresson, "Honored Provider of Veterans Funeral CareTM." Condolences may be made at AndersonFamilyFuneralHomes.com.
