Nellie S. Coates

Coates, Nellie S., 81, Mount Union, passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Embassy of Huntingdon Park. Born June 4, 1940, in Mapleton Depot, daughter of the late William and Evaline (Booher) Shives. Preceded in death by her husband Edward Coates Jr. who died on March 21, 1981. Nellie is survived by two siblings: her sister, Nancy Shives Benson and brother, William Shives Jr. and his wife Sandra; and also by many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Wallace Shives. Mrs. Coates graduated from Captain Jack Joint High School, Mount Union in 1959. Upon graduating, she began her working career in Washington D.C., after a few years in D.C., she moved to Philadelphia where she lived and worked for most of her adult life. She returned to the local area to care for her mother and stepfather after she retired. Nellie was an avid reader and enjoyed following the Philadelphia Pro sports teams, Phillies, Eagles, and Flyers. There will not be a visitation or funeral service.
