Born on the family farm in the Shaver’s Creek Valley on February 3, 1938, son of the late Armour Confer and Viola (Bell) Eberle. Also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas B. (Helen) Eberle and A. Confer (Dorothy) Eberle. John is survived by his loving wife of over 65 years, Donna (Watson) Eberle, married September 10, 1960, in the Alexandria Methodist Church, and daughter, Beth (Perry) Smith; son, Bryan (Linda) Eberle; daughter, Jennifer (Tony) Payne; grandsons, Jerrod (Ellice) Smith, David Eberle, Gregg (Hannah) Eberle, Kyle (Carrie) Payne, Colin Payne; granddaughters, Janelle (Stephen) Cohn, Rachel Payne (Braxton), Lauren Payne, Jessica (Darren) Dengler, Cara Eberle, Gretchen Payne; great-grandchildren, Colton, Finnley, Cora, Camille, Lincoln, Johnathan, Louie, Kaiya, Valor, Elisha, and Marlie. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. A lifelong and devoted member of Petersburg-Bethel Presbyterian Church, Mr. Eberle faithfully served his church family for many years as an Elder and Trustee. His commitment to the church extended far beyond these roles, as he served on various committees and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. His faith in the Lord guided his life and the way he cared for others. Mr. Eberle proudly served his country in the United States Army’s 10th Mountain Division from 1956-1962 including two cold winters in Germany. His sense of duty and service continued long after his military service, as he remained active in veteran and community organizations throughout his life. He was deeply involved in his community and gave generously of his time through many organizations. He was a life member of the Alexandria American Legion Post 520. He served as Chaplain and was an active member of the American Legion/VFW Honor Guard, honoring and remembering fellow veterans with dignity and respect. He also served nine years on the Juniata Valley School Board and was a past member of the Juniata Valley Ambulance Association Board, the Mooresville Cemetery Board, was active in the Mt. Moriah Lodge #300 F&AM, and was a life member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Altoona. His commitment to the community also included helping maintain the Rails-to-Trails from Alexandria to Williamsburg, preserving a cherished resource for others to enjoy. He was a longtime volunteer with Red Cross Blood Drives, where he was recognized as a lifetime blood donor. Professionally, John spent 40 years working for Agway Inc, where he started as a delivery truck driver then quickly advanced, serving as manager in State College and Alexandria until his retirement. Following retirement, he continued to work part-time at the Williamsburg Agway store and would eventually move on to work for three years with the USDA Farm Service. Through his work, he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of colleagues and customers alike. He was a proud member of the Randolph Spring Hunting Club in Diamond Valley. He loved the outdoors and the group of friends that all enjoyed their camp with its over 106 years of history. He also enjoyed much of his retirement with friends at Loop Valley Lodge, where he served as part-time project manager and “Plan D” cook. Above all else, John loved the Lord and cherished the life he built with his beloved wife and family. His greatest joy was spending time with those he loved most. He will be remembered for his faith, his servant’s heart, and the many lives he touched through his dedication to both church and community. Friends and family will be received at the Petersburg-Bethel Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 5435 Bethel Rd, Petersburg, PA 16669 on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from 9:30 – 11:00 AM with a service at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary, followed by additional visitation time.
