Hammond, Helen F., 91, Cresson, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on May 6, 2019, surrounded by her family at her home. Born June 4, 1927, Altoona, daughter of the late Robert C. and Marie C. (Westrick) Eckenrode. Preceded in death by her loving husband, Bernard “Red” Hammond and son-in-law, Chet Beres. Survived by her children, Bernie Hammond and wife, Joan, NY; Tom Hammond, Hollidaysburg; Dorothy Beres, Johnstown; and Helen Beyer and husband, Chris, CO; nine grandchildren, Tim, Karrie, Mark, Bryan, Mike, Scott, Chris, Lauren, and Matt; 10 great-grandchildren; siblings, James Eckenrode and wife, Judy, Carrolltown; Tom Eckenrode and wife, Diane, CO; and Jeanne Pipas and husband, George, Emporium. Helen was an active member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson Area Women’s Club, and the Cresson American Legion Auxiliary Post 238 where she held all positions including most recently as Chaplain. She was a 39-year breast cancer survivor and loved being acknowledged by the Penn Cambria Pink Panthers. Helen was a homemaker and worked as a cook for the Penn Cambria High School. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening and sewing. Following her retirement, she was active in the Cresson Senior Center and loved spending time with her sister, sisters-in-law and friends. Helen will be remembered for being a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Friends will be received May 10, 2019 from 4-8 p.m. at Kennedy-Anderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, where a vigil for the deceased will be held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated May 11, 2019 at 9:30 a.m., St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Rev. Leo Arnone, Celebrant. Committal St. Aloysius Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Penn Cambria Pink Panthers Organization or to the Cresson Library in memory of Helen.
