Schenk, Elmer J., 88, Cresson, entered into eternal rest on Feb. 1, 2016. Born July 31, 1927, in Ebensburg, son of the late Vincent A. and Pearl C. (Wills) Schenk. Preceded in death by loving and wonderful wife, Harriet Ann (Kenny) Schenk; brothers, Francis, Fred, Merle, Walter, Ira; and sisters, Louise and Vera. Last surviving member of immediate family. Survived by daughters: Susan M. Egnot, wife of John; and Mary Beth Eckenrode, wife of Bernard, all of Cresson; and grandchildren: John Egnot Jr. and wife, Kristi, Suwanee, Georgia; Bryan Eckenrode, Tucson, Arizona; and First Lieutenant Meghan Eckenrode, Vandenberg AFB, California. World War II Navy veteran, serving on the USS James C. Owens, DD776 in the Pacific Region in 1945. Member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus, Council 4259; and American Legion, Post 238, all of Cresson; and Sankertown V.F.W. Post 7377. Elmer worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1972, after 24 years of service. He then went to work for the Cambria County Civil Defense Dept., where he spent tireless hours working during the 1977 Johnstown Flood. In 1978, he was appointed the Cambria County Civil Defense Director, resigning in 1979 to become Bureau Chief of the Mainliner Newspaper, which he held until his retirement. Past Commander of Cresson American Legion, Post 238, and past commander of District 20/Cambria County from 1962-1964. He also served in numerous offices and committees on the local and state levels. Family and friends received from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Charles M. Kennedy Funeral Home, Cresson, where vigil for the deceased will held. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Church, Rev. Leo F. Arnone. Committal, church cemetery. Military graveside rite by Cresson American Legion, Sankertown V.F.W. and other local veteran organizations.
