Obituary

Janet Shugarts, 85, passed away on November 5, 2026, holding hands with her husband Earl “Dayton” Shugarts, Jr. 87, unwilling to be apart for long, he followed her into the arms of the Lord mere hours later. Mr. and Mrs. Shugarts enjoyed 61 years of marriage.

Janet was born October 2, 1941, daughter of the late John and Madeline (Miller) Dinardi. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by brother, Carmel Dinardi; sister, Ramona (Gary) Shugarts; and infant brother, John Dinardi.

Dayton was born April 26, 1939, son of the late Earl Dayton Shugarts Sr. and Zoe Rae (Shugarts) Fraundoefer.

They are survived by their son, John (Traci) Shugarts; grandson, Jonathan (Emily) Clemens; granddaughters, Megan (Dylan) Knable, Lauren Shugarts; great-grandsons, Vance Hower, Micah Clemens, Cooper Knable; great-granddaughters, Zillia Clemens, Cambrie Knable, Sylvie Knable; nephews, Alex (Korina) Miller, David (Starla) Shugarts; niece, Sofia (Luke) Dinardi; brothers, Dennis Dinardi, Joe (Sandi) Dinardi, Roland Shugarts, Barry Shugarts, and their families.

Mr. Shugarts devoted 45 years to teaching mathematics for the Mount Union School District, shaping the minds of countless students along the way. Teaching was more than a career; it was a commitment to helping others learn, grow, and succeed. In addition to the classroom, he spent over 18 years as a head football coach and athletic director, and was also the former Mayor of Kistler. He shared his passion for the game and teaching young athletes lessons that extended far beyond the football field. Through his years as a teacher and coach, he made an impact on countless lives. He was lifelong sports enthusiast, and especially loved Penn State football and Mount Union athletics. Whether watching a big game or following his favorite teams, sports were always close to his heart.

Mrs. Shugarts had an unforgettable personality, she was outspoken, hilarious, and truly eccentric, she was one of a kind. She had a way of saying exactly what was on her mind and a sense of humor that could leave everyone laughing. She was never someone who blended into the crowd, and there truly was no one else like her. Her family will forever remember her funny comments, her unique ways, and all the moments that made being around her so memorable. She was a member of the Kistler Borough community and spent much of her time volunteering for the Mount Union School District, whether it was in the cafeteria or sporting events, she found great joy in being around and watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Whether cheering them on or simply enjoying time spent together, her family was a source of endless happiness and pride.

Friends and family will be received Monday, November 16, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church, Mount Union where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment to follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Shirleysburg.
