Briggs, Daryl Ivan, 74, A longtime resident of Shirleysburg, PA entered peacefully through the gates of heaven on Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. Born September 5, 1947, in Newton Hamilton, PA to the late Hilda (Parsons) and Calvin Briggs. Daryl graduated from Captain Jack High School, Mt. Union in 1965. Daryl proudly served as an Aircraft Electrical Technician in the United States Air Force from 1966-1970. He was assigned to the 604th Military Airlift Squadron at Clark AFB, Philippines 1967-1968. While stationed at Clark AFB he supported aircraft recovery operations in Vietnam. He finished his active-duty service assigned to the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing in Myrtle Beach, SC in 1970 He was Honorably discharged after successfully attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant and awarded The National Defense Service Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and The Air Force Good Conduct Medal. While enlisted, Daryl and Peggy (Jacobs) were married on June 8, 1969, at the Newton Hamilton Methodist Church, Newton Hamilton, PA. They recently celebrated 53 years of marriage. Following his military career, Daryl began his career in corrections and was employed by Huntingdon SCI as a Correctional Officer. While working full time, he attended Penn State University and earned his degree in 1982. He successfully attained the rank of Deputy Superintendent at SCI Smithfield. He was well respected by his fellow peers and was lead for the Huntingdon SCI CERT team. Daryl retired in 2005. Daryl was an avid fisherman, hunter and carpenter.  He was his happiest outdoors, surrounded by the calm, quiet of nature. “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks” - John Muir.   He was a loving, dedicated husband, father and grandfather who cherished sharing outdoor adventures with his family. Survived by his wife, Peggy Briggs, son, Daryl Sheldon Briggs and daughter Carey Bernice Briggs Stoner, her husband Jamison Stoner and his grandsons Jared, Brendon & Ty Stoner who he enjoyed sharing hunting and fishing stories with. Also surviving are his siblings, Bernard Briggs, Stanley Briggs, his wife Beverly, Susan Mickey, her husband James Mickey, and Duane Briggs. Preceding his death are his parents Hilda (Parsons) and Calvin Briggs, brother Russ Briggs and his wife Gwen Briggs and two nieces, Beth Ann Briggs and Melissa Sue Briggs. At the request of Mr. Briggs, there will be no public viewing. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 12, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home, Pastor Derrick Suttles, officiant, with State Correctional Institute Honor Guard. Interment to follow at Newton Hamilton Cemetery with military honors. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in Daryl’s honor to the Newton Wayne Fire Company, 127 Kinsloe Ave, Newton Hamilton, PA 17075.
